Nauru, an Island Adrift - 2009

Director: Julinao Ribeiro Salgado
Prod co. Film Oblige
Film Editor: Paul Carlin
Runtime: 80 min.
Country: France

Nauru, a tiny little-known island in the Micronesian South Pacific, serves as a devastating example of a people and place utterly destroyed by economic growth divorced from environmental priorities. A century’s worth of rampant phosphate exploitation has drained the nation’s natural resources. Once the second richest country in the world, with the highest per capita income, Nauru now faces complete financial disaster, a health crisis, and governmental and infrastructural collapse.

Nauru premiered at the Hot Docs Festival in 2009.
