RunTime: 50 min

Documentary on the philosophy and recent work of internationally renowned photographer Sebastiao Salgado. Using a montage of black-and-white stills and framed by an informal dialogue between Salgado and writer John Berger, the film recounts the six-and-a-half years in which the photographer travelled to more than 47 countries, where he captured some of his most compelling images of war, famine, ethnic cleansing and mass migration.

"Carlin, Berger and Salgado aren't afraid to face their subject with absolute seriousness. And what's more, with their uncompromising will to follow form, they have the courage to ask you to do the same."
Emma Perry - Time Out

The Spectre of Hope was selected for competition in the Montreal Film Festival 2001.
